How to Classify an Infomercial
Infomercials must be classified before they can be broadcast on commercial free-to-air television. The process for classifying an infomercial is slightly different to the TVC classification process, however, the principles are the same. There are three main steps involved with classification of infomercials:
STEP 1: PRE-PRODUCTION - DETERMINING ANY IMPLICATIONS FOR SCRIPT DEVELOPMENT
1. Review the Classification Handbook
This handbook provides an overview of CAD’s classification procedures, an A-to-Z guide to the main legislative requirements affecting commercials (known as the Television Production Checklist) and detail on the placement codes applied to advertising material.
STEP 2: POST-PRODUCTION - SUBMITTING A FINISHED INFOMERCIAL TO CAD
1. Complete the CAD Application & Order Form /Attach a script /Attach your documentation
| a) |
You will need to complete the CAD Application/Order form. These forms capture your contact details, information about the infomercial/s you are submitting, as well as your billing details. Please ensure all information is complete. Incomplete forms will result in a delay in processing your application. |
| b) |
Attach a copy of the script/s to your application. The script must detail, in full, the audio and vision including voice-overs, jingles, graphics, supers and disclaimers etc. |
| c) |
Attach relevant substantiation and documentation. Substantiation may need to be provided for claims made in the ad. Some categories require special substantiation. Please refer to page 15 for more information. |
Once completed, send your signed Application/Order form, detailed script and substantiation to CAD. You can email to cad@freetv.com.au; or fax to (02) 9969 8147. Please factor the longer lead times into your schedules. CAD requires 28 days to review.
2. Provide a VHS copy of the infomercial with ID board
Please provide your material on VHS. Please post or courier to CAD, Ground Floor, 44 Avenue Road, Mosman NSW 2088. Unfortunately, VHS tapes cannot be returned.
Note: Classification cannot commence until ALL of the following are received by CAD; your Application/Order form AND; any required substantiation and/or documentation; AND a copy of your informercial/s on VHS.
STEP 3: PRIOR-TO-AIR - RECEIVING A CAD NUMBER
1. Check if your infomercial has been classified
Use the CAD Search function on the Free TV website www.freetv.com.au/cad to determine if CAD has logged your material and to check the status of your application. The CAD Database is updated hourly, on the half hour.
Given the duration of infomercials, CAD requires 28 days to review. CAD cannot commence classification until ALL materials are received.
