Free-to-View Digital

Digital terrestrial television broadcasts commenced in Australia's capital cities on 1 January, 2001 and have been rolled out across Australia. The free-to-air television networks have invested heavily in digital transmission infrastructure and have been simulcasting in both analogue and digital as the transition to a digital television broadcasting system takes place.

Free-to-view digital television now provides Australians with their first new commercial TV channels in four decades. These new HD channels have been introduced as a result of government legislation that for the first time allows commercial free-to-air broadcasters to multi-channel. Each network is currently allowed to offer one High Definition digital channel in addition to their main channel. From 1 January, 2009 the broadcasters will be allowed an additional Standard Definition digital channel.

To further enhance the viewing experience, some Free TV broadcasters are now openly broadcasting their program listings, creating Australia’s first free electronic program guide (EPG), which can be received by all compliant DTV receivers.

Free TV Australia has pioneered digital television broadcasting in Australia, playing a key role in the digitisation process of free-to-air television. The Australian free-to-air television industry remains committed to achieving the successful roll-out of digital television services in Australia.
