Digital terrestrial television broadcasts commenced in Australia's capital cities on 1 January, 2001 and have been rolled out across Australia. The free-to-air television networks have invested heavily in digital transmission infrastructure and have been simulcasting in both analogue and digital as the transition to a digital television broadcasting system takes place.
Free-to-view digital television now provides Australians with their first new commercial TV channels in four decades. In January 2009, new Government legislation came into effect allowing for the introduction of digital multi-channelling in Australia. This paved the way for a significant expansion of commercial free-to-air television services.
Freeview, the free-to-air digital platform which currently offers over 15 channels, has now launched its free electronic program guide (EPG), an on-screen TV guide that lists all programs to be shown on Freeview channels for the next 7 days.
Free TV Australia has pioneered digital television broadcasting in Australia, playing a key role in the digitisation process of free-to-air television. The Australian free-to-air television industry remains committed to achieving the successful roll-out of digital television services in Australia.
